JOHANNESBURG - The Competition Commission referred a Tshwane-based company to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution after it sold hand sanitiser to the South Africa Police Service.
In 2020, Red Roses supplied SAPS with bulk hand sanitisers in 25-litre containers.
The company supplied hand sanitisers to SAPS in 90,000 25-litre containers for a cost of R4,700 rand each, representing a gross markup of 236 percent.
The Commission launched an investigation after complaints were lodged by the SAPS for its procurement of Personal Protective Equipment during the national state of disaster.
The Commission has now found that Red Roses Africa charged excessive prices to the SAPS.
It's the third company that has been investigated by the commission.
Recently, another supplier of hand sanitiser, BlueCollar Occupational Health was slapped with a R3.5-million fine for excessive pricing.
