SA nears peak of rate hikes, says economist

JOHANNESBURG - There may be some relief for cash-strapped consumers.

We may have seen the last interest rate hike for the year as inflation begins to decline.

ABSA senior economist Peter Worthington says there may even be a cut towards the end of the year.

"We think that the January hike was probably the last one. We did acknowledge at the time that the risks were in the direction of perhape one more hike in March.

"And actually what has happened with the exchange rate since then, suggests that those risks have intensified a little bit," he said.

"So we could get one more, maybe two but we are close to the peak of the hiking cycle because we now have the real repo rate in positive territory."
