JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s state-owned oil company PetroSA plans to build a network of gas-fired power plants.
This could see an additional 180 megawatts of generation capacity fed into the national grid.
Leftover residual product from its oil-to-gas process at its Mossel Bay plant would be used to run generators.
While some maintenance would be required at plants, the project would largely use existing infrastructure and reserves.
PetroSA chief operating officer Sesakho Magadla says the company has initiated the process to obtain a gas trading licence, after which it could potentially have the project up and running in 18 to 24 months.
"That gas is already in the field, ready to be produced," Magadla said.
"It's connected with the pipeline but for us to be able to produce that gas it would take us about 18 to 24 months because we need to do some major maintenance work and some minor modifications to the FA platform."
