JOHANNESBURG - The signing of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act has cleared the way for major changes in the energy production sector.
The law is aimed at creating a competitive environment to ultimately reduce the cost of electricity.

It also makes provision for the establishment of an independent transmission company which will be the sole custodian of the national grid.
But the National Union of Mineworkers is not happy.
The union has condemned the signing of this bill, saying it paves the way for the privatisation of the energy sector.
