John Lamola appointed as new SAA CEO

JOHANNESBURG - Professor John Lamola has been appointed as Group Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways.

He previously served as interim CEO after Thomas Kgokolo elected not to have his contract renewed.

The Democratic Alliance is questioning the involvement of Deputy President Paul Mashatile and Transport Minister Barbara Creecy in the interview process.

The party believes Kilavuka was sidelined for the position despite his qualifications and experience.

The highest-scoring candidate, Philip Saunders, was also rejected in favour of Lamola.

The DA raised its concerns about the integrity and transparency of the process as it contends Lamola ranked the lowest in independent competency assessments.

Creecy maintains the candidates were ranked fairly.

She said, “As a member of the Cabinet, I support the objective of building a strong, capable and ethical public service".

In outlining the selection process, Creecy said she and Mashatile conducted the interviews in their respective government capacities to ensure the most suitable candidate for SAA GCEO was presented to cabinet.
