CAPE TOWN - There are very clear rules and codes of conduct around collecting outstanding debt.
Among those being that once a debt is prescribed, which means that it is no longer legally enforceable, a debt collector may not try to reinstate it by forcing a consumer to sign for it.
Agreeing with this is personal finance journalist, Maya Fisher-French, who spoke to eNCA about harassment over prescribed debt.
She said it is very important to know if one's debt has prescribed or not as this will guide you on whether or not you are obligated to continue paying or not.
