Fraudsters exploit taxpayers with fake SARS notices

JOHANNESBURG - Another major scam has hit taxpayers who use the eFiling system.

Scammers are using fake SARS logos and notices to dupe them into believing they owe money.

They are threatened that if no payment is received they will not be able to file their 2024 returns.

Jean-Louis Nel from Van Huyssteens Commercial Attorneys said as a rule of thumb, SARS would never send an SMS or email requesting that you follow a link or that you have to open a document.

"When SARS does correspond with taxpayers it would usually be an email or SMS to inform you that there's a notification on your e-filing profile," he said.
