JOHANNESBURG - It could take years before a resolution is reached between SA and the EU on citrus export trade regulations.
Trade expert Gustav Brink says double standards are at play accusing the EU of making up excuses.
He was speaking after consultations at the World Trade Organisation this week.
There are two contentious issues: Citrus black spot and false codling moth.
The EU claims it could threaten their local industry.
However, Brink says the EU is not imposing the same regulations on other countries with similar problems.
The current regulations are costing the local industry R2-billion and limits export capabilities.
South Africa exports around 37 percent of its citrus products to the EU.
Brink believes double standards are at play.
