Eskom insists power cuts break is due to enough capacity

JOHANNESBURG - Eskom is denying that it's spending billions of rand to burn diesel to avoid power cuts.

The country has enjoyed over a month without rolling blackouts.

Some believe that the reprieve in power cuts is an electioneering stunt by the governing party.

The power utility's former boss, Andre de Ruyter, recently said the power cuts break is due to Eskom burning diesel “at a rate of knots."

But in a statement, Eskom has attributed the continuous suspension to sufficient generation capacity and improvements in energy availability factor -- among other issues.

The power utility has dismissed media reports, saying it's monitoring its Open-Cycle Gas Turbines usage.
