Domestic workers' earnings being swept away

JOHANNESBURG - Consumers are feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis.

Food prices are exorbitant, municipal rates are increasing and there could be a hefty petrol increase in August.

Domestic workers are among the hardest hit by high inflation and economic decline.

WATCH | A dark picture for domestic workers

This is according to SweepSouth managing director, Luke Kannemeyer.

"This is where for us the bigger picture is looking at things like electricity crisis, like economic development at a more local level and ensuring that domestic workers are registered for the right social protections," Kannemeyer said.

"And then from government's side, ensuring that access to those protections and enforcement of those protections is much more effective because South Africa can boost that."
