Discussion | Nersa's approved 12.74% hike met with criticism

JOHANNESBURG - The ripple effect of tariff hikes will be inflation, less consumer spending and small businesses crumbling down. 

This was a grim picture painted by CEO of Black Entrepreneurs Alliance Refilwe Monageng painted as the Nersa has approved a 12.7 % increase to kick in form April.

Manageng has slammed the hikes explaining how they could be the breaking point for many micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. 

He said this could potentially lead to job cuts as businesses struggle to cope with the added costs.

To add salt to injury, on Friday Eskom announced the return of power cuts. 

Stage 3 load-shedding kicked off at 5pm and expected to persist through the weekend. 

Business owners continue to feel the brunt as they have to find alternative ways to keep their lights on.

Hartmut Winkler, Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Johannesburg said they need to long at a long term solution to deal with load shedding.
