JOHANNESBURG - Most domestic workers are caught up in spiralling debt.
They owe stores, friends and "mashonisas" more than they make in a month.
What makes it worse is that salaries are dropping as employers cut hours as they themselves struggle to cope.
Most earn just under R3,000 per month and are sole breadwinners.
However, senior economist Xhanti Payi says there is light at the end of the tunnel.
"We have to survive these next few quarters before we start to see interest rates coming down," he said.
