JOHANNESBURG - South African consumers are in for tough times.
The latest 2023 Household Affordability Index and Key Data by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group show that most basic food prices have increased.

"The main finding of our index is that food prices and inflation remains volatile. When we look at last month for instance we saw a slight decrease of R15 and this month we see an increase of R25 so there is a lot of fluidity and volatility in terms of food prices and that continues, which means the impact on the consumer remains," said Mervyn Abrahams from the group.
Last week consumer inflation eased to 5.4%.
The June figure is significantly lower than the 6.3% recorded in May.
