Chicken Licken loses bid to stop smaller chain from using the word “soul”

JOHANNESBURG - Chicken Licken has lost its bid to stop a smaller chain from using the word “soul”.

It's failed to convince the Supreme Court of Appeal that the Greek food outlet, Soul Souvlaki is sowing confusion.

Soul Souvlaki started as a market stall and now operates from nine branches across Johannesburg.

The court said it was up to Chicken Licken to prove that there would be confusion if Soul Souvlaki were allowed to continue trading under that name.

Chicken Licken was ordered to pay legal costs.
