AG slams govt over R1bn outstanding audit fees

 

JOHANNESBURG - The auditor-general has slammed government for outstanding fees of R1bn owed to it.

The AG says the debt continues to rise and is having an impact in the ability of the office function properly.

It's owed R1bn in outstanding audit fees for the period ending March, with a large portion that coming from municipalities, often criticised for gross financial mismanagement.

In its annual report presented to Parliament, the Auditor General's office warned the increasing debt, will have an impact on their operational efficiency.

Local government is currently responsible for 45% of the total debt, while national government is responsible for 8%.
