Discussion | India lifts rice export restrictions

PRETORIA - Some good news for South African consumers as India has finally removed the rice export ban. 

This comes after the country banned non-basmati white and broken rice back in 2023.

The ban saw global rice prices rallying, as many were concerned about possible supply shortages.

But, we are far from that reality today as global rice prices have softened notably in recent weeks because of the expected ample global supplies.

While this is a positive development for rice consumers, it’s important to note that white maize prices are likely to remain elevated. 

Chief economist at Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, Wandile Sihlobo spoke to eNCA.
