JOHANNESBURG - A growing number of countries, both in the East and in Europe, are turning to coal.

The International Energy Agency says global coal demand hit another all-time high in 2023.

Asia still leads the way, consuming more than 80% of coal produced.

In Europe, Germany revived its coal-fired power stations, while Eskom plans to continue operating certain coal-fired power plants beyond their scheduled retirement dates.
