PRETORIA - Extortion in the construction industry has skyrocketed in recent years and has cost the economy a massive R680bn since 2019.
In its efforts to clamp down on the trend, the Public Works and Infrastructure Department has set up a social intervention unit, but industry body, Business Against Crime South Africa says there's little indication of this scourge ending.
It says construction firms should instead build extortion preparation plans ahead of every project.
