CAPE TOWN - Consumers are being hit from all sides, with an increase in the cost of living.
Now, the outbreak of avian flu is set to make things worse.
Poultry farms are under quarantine, and there's a ban on exports.
The poultry industry is pleading with government to allow them to import eggs, to keep their businesses afloat. Inevitably, that means higher prices.
Meanwhile, the Competition Commission says rationing the number of eggs consumers buy will keep prices stable and ensure lower-income households can still buy some.
With the price of eggs skyrocketing, the commission says rationing will ensure access to eggs for all rather than just allowing those who can afford them to have their fill.
