JOHANNESBURG - There are growing concerns that the country isn't producing enough vets to meet the country's needs.
According to a recent report by the South African Veterinary Association, over 50 percent of vets want to leave.
The economy and safety worries have been highlighted as the main reasons for immigration.
The association's president Paul van der Merwe said the country cannot afford to lose veterinarians.
"The cost of the training of veterinarians is a six-year course."
