"Throwing money at Eskom won't solve the problem": analyst

JOHANNESBURG - One energy analyst believes throwing money at Eskom won't solve its problems.

However, Ruse Moleshe says if the money is well distributed and stringent conditions are followed, it will help the struggling power utility and citizens.

The National Council of Provinces has passed the Eskom Debt Relief Bill, which would transfer of portion of the utility's debt to National Treasury.

Moleshe said, "throwing money at the problem will not assist, however, we understand Treasury has done their homework in the form of an independent company that is reviewing Eskom and they will have conditions of how the money will go in."

"So hopefully it's not just throwing money, it is a measured risk from Treasury because at the end of the day this will affect South Africa."

"The conditions will be stringent together with restructuring the entity and making sure we have the right parties on the table, ethical leadership that will lead transformation of the entity."
