SA's electricity crisis | Immediate intervention is needed

JOHANNESBURG - Head of investment and infrastructure in the Presidency, Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, says immediate intervention is needed to deal with the energy crisis as well as the skills shortage.

He has penned a report on the bleak state of our electricity systems, saying the situation is dire and it will take years to fix the system.

Rolling blackouts are continuing and Eskom says theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure have reached disastrous proportions.

"Even if tomorrow it gets to be announced that we’re going to do roof solar intervention, we’re going to sit with two problems," Ramokgopa said.

"The availability of equipment. They can only meet 18.2 percent of the demand… The availability of equipment will be a problem."
