SA-US relations | Impact of high level visit to Russia

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s visit to Russia for a high-level meeting cannot upset America more than it already has.

That’s according to international relations expert Brooks Spector.

Spector says the visit by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni can't be more damaging than the allegations of SA supplying Russia with weapons of war.

Ntshavheni will engage with authorities on matters 'material to initiatives' announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa of the African Leaders' Peace Mission to Russia and Ukraine.

"I don’t know whether it’s going to upset the West much further than it already has," Spector said.

"I would offer a demurrer about the collapse of the rand. Currencies in foreign exchange circumstances don’t collapse simply because somebody alleges something.

"The basics of the economy, as well as emotion, will govern foreign exchange."
