GBV epidemic | Government criticised for lack of financial backing

CAPE TOWN - The second Presidential Summit on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide has been described by many as another pep talk.

Non-profit organisations fighting against the scourge of GBV say the summit failed to address real issues -- chief among them the lack of government funding.

The Safe House in Cape Town is one of the organisations affected.

Its director, Kathy Cronje, says they're faced with a dire situation.

But Olive Shisana, co-chair of the planning committee of the presidential GBVF summit, said it's untrue that government has not done anything to fight gender-based violence and femicide.

She says most of the 19 declarations signed between the president and civil society organisations have been achieved.

She said government remains committed to combating violence against women.
