Casac states support for electoral reforms

JOHANNESBURG - Civil society organisations support electoral reforms ahead of the 2024 elections.

In 2020, the Constitutional Court ruled the Electoral Act was unconstitutional because it doesn't allow independent candidates to contest elections to the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.

Casac's Lawson Naidoo said, "what has been essentially proposed by range of civil society organisations is merely  that we used the model that is already in place at local government where we vote for ward candidates and second ballot for PR...the simple solution is that it should be replicated at provincial and national level because the voters understand the system."

"It is simple and we have used for many many years and it create a constituency based system where were know who our representatives are ...at the moment we got to the polls we put the cross in the name of political parties and that party determine who their representatives in parliament are going to be and those MPs account to the political party that put them there and not to the electorates. That is fundamental flaw in our electoral system."
