JOHANNESBURG - Unconfirmed reports emerged on Wednesday night that Cosatu has suspended its General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Sources within the union federation have told eNCA that Vavi has been placed on indefinite special leave, and that he did not oppose the decision, which was taken at a special Central Executive Committee meeting in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

None of them were willing to go on record, but Cosatu was expected to make a formal announcement on the union leader’s future on Thursday.

This comes, despite NUMSA's attempts to spare him.

A meeting of the federation’s top brass was called after Vavi admitted to having an affair with a junior member of staff.

He was accused of raping the married woman, but the complaint was later withdrawn.
