Pretoria street names at a cross roads

South Africa
Dozens of Pretoria roads were renamed in 2012. For six months both the old and the new signs have been displayed, as dictated by the by-laws. eNCA

It's out with the old and in with the new. The dual street names may have made it easier to navigate the capital but after six months of displaying both names, the city has removed the old signs leaving many confused.

The street signs are up but some are still fighting the change. Lobby group AfriForum is taking the city to court with an application to stop the city council from removing Duncan Street and Church Street signs.

In the coming weeks, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile is expected to settle the hotly contested issue of whether or not Pretoria will be renamed as Tshwane.
