Despite this, thousands of prospective first years line up outside universities and colleges to try and apply.

But, many are unsuccessful.

Tertiary institutions are set to open their doors for registration soon.

Many hopefuls will be making their way there, even though they haven't applied.

Here are some tips for prospective students:

* Some tertiary institutions will issue notices of courses that are still available.

* It's better to apply online.

* If you haven’t applied, know which institutions have available space before going there.
