30 Years of democracy | First democratic elections in 1994 ended white minority rule

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa used Saturday’s Freedom Day address to detail the progress of what he calls South Africa’s “young democracy”. 

But he acknowledged that despite the gains made, a lack of electricity and clean drinking water remain a major concern as well as the divide in access to healthcare, transport and jobs.

Responding to detractors of the ANC’s governance over the last 30 years, Ramaphosa said only those who shut their eyes to progress would deny the country is a better place than 1994.
