Endangered people | Gang violence surges in Eldorado Park | Part 2

JOHANNESBURG -In part two of our special feature of Endangered People, we turn our gaze from Westbury to Eldorado Park in the south of Johannesburg.

Like Westbury, it’s battling a mushrooming drug pandemic that’s sparked increased gang violence in the area despite regular anti-crime campaigns.

Eldorado Park used to be a quiet suburb. Its streets were safe.

But with an influx of drugs into the area, it’s been given the unofficial name of Lollytown.

That’s because of the high number of so-called lolly lounges – or drug dens - that have indirectly fueled gang activity and its accompanying violence and death.

Peaceful-looking streets have now become crime scenes as drive-by shootings happen in broad daylight.

eNCA producer Lee McCabe takes us into the thick of things with this special report.
